Czech Baking Class

 

March 21, 2026, Spring Baking Class

This class is offered by the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS). Visit the website to learn about Texas Czechs and the other upcoming events: https://bvchs.webnode.page    

You will learn how to make genuine Czech and Moravian Kolache, including some of the fillings, from scratch.  Both the small kolache and the large pizza-sized kolache from Southwestern Bohemia (Chodské koláče) will be made.  In addition, we may be baking buchty (buns with filling) and vdolky (buns without filling).

Class size is limited to 12, and the cost to attend is $40.

November 15, 2025, Fall Baking Class

The Baking Class [Baking for Christmas] was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center kitchen.  The class learned how to make Vánočka [braided Czech Christmas Bread]. 
 
July 26, 2025 Summer Baking Class:

The Baking Class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center kitchen.  If you missed this class, there will be a baking demonstration in Caldwell on Friday, September 12, 2025, in conjunction with the Kolache Festival [https:www.burlesoncountytx.com/kolache-fest/].

 

March 22, 2025 Spring Kolache Baking Class:

The Baking Class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen, 600 E. 26th Street, Bryan, TX.  The class learned to make genuine Czech and Moravian Kolache [Koláče) including some of the fillings, from scratch.  Both the small kolache and the large pizza-sized kolache from Southwestern Bohemia were made.

 

November 9, 2024 Fall Baking Class:

The Baking Class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen, 600 E. 26th Street, Bryan, TX.  The class learned to make Christmas bread  [Vanočka].

 

April 6, 2024 Spring Baking Class:

The Baking Class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen, 600 E. 26th Street, Bryan, TX.  There were 13 participants in the class which made poppy seed, prune, and yogurt cheese filling along with the large Southwestern Bohemia-style kolach and the regular-sized Czech/Moravian kolache.  Participants enjoyed a loaf of rye sourdough bread for lunch that was baked fresh along with a homemade garlic cheese spread.

 

November 18, 2023, Fall Baking Class:  

The Baking Class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen, 600 E. 26th Street, Bryan, TX.  The main item the class learned to make was Christmas bread.

March 4, 2023 Spring Kolache Baking Class:

The baking class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen, 600 E. 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.  The class learned to make genuine Czech Kolache and fillings from scratch.

 

November 19, 2022 Fall Kolache Baking Class:

The baking class was held with at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen in Bryan, TX  Attendees learned how to bake Gingerbread Cookies (Perničky) and Czech Christmas Bread (Vanočka).

 

April 23, 2022 Spring Kolache Baking Class:

The baking class was held at the St. Joseph Parish Activity Center Kitchen and had 12 participants.  The day was spent making kolache dough, grinding poppy seed filling, preparing yogurt cheese filling [tvaroh], and making a sheet cake with the fruit of choice and crumbly topping [drobenka].  Before lunch, a loaf of rye sourdough bread was made and baked for the class to enjoy by all for lunch.  The afternoon was spent making various styles of kolache.
